This year, SCG celebrates 10 years of removing barriers for complex patients. To honour this occasion and the legacy of the 36-Hour Challenge, we will be running a “10 years in 10 days” anniversary fundraising campaign, Presented by ViiV Healthcare, October 19, 2026, to October 28, 2026.
Over the course of these 10 days, we will highlight memories from the last 10 years through a special commemorative social media campaign on Facebook and Instagram. We hope you will join us in sharing our social media posts, your memories and helping us fundraise $25,000 to help SCG continue to create better health outcomes for complex patients in Saskatchewan.

10 years of second chances
nora at second steps
Nora, a young mother to Sam and expecting her second child, was referred to Sanctum Care Group’s 2nd Steps Independent Living Suites. As a graduate of both Sanctum 1.5 and PORT, Nora was eligible for a supportive rental with 2nd Steps.
At the time of referral, Nora was facing significant instability — she was being asked to leave another program and was under probation, with a strict condition to reside at a designated location. Without immediate intervention, she risked being sent back to jail, and her daughter Sam would have entered care.
Thanks to a collaborative and timely effort between Sanctum Care Group and the Ministry of Social Services, Nora and Sam were able to move into 2nd Steps, ensuring that Sam remained in her mom’s care. In her new home, Nora found the stability she needed to continue working on her sobriety, fulfill her case plan with the Ministry, attend programming, and prepare for the arrival of her second child.
Since her move, Nora has achieved several major milestones: she has successfully completed the terms of her probation, her Ministry file has been closed, and she has given birth to a healthy baby boy. While challenges have arisen throughout her journey, Sanctum Care Group’s trauma-informed, harm-reduction approach allowed for creative case planning and meaningful support — ensuring Sam was never placed in care and Nora had the tools she needed to succeed.
Rodney at mendo
Rodney’s journey with MENDO began in June 2024 and marked a turning point in his life. When we met him, he was staying at the STC shelter where he had been living for several years.
At that time, he described his world as being “dark”- his partner and mother passed away, his children were apprehended due to his addiction, and he had been diagnosed with PTSD after a traumatic car accident. He struggled with houselessness and faced numerous challenges without identification or income. However, through the relentless efforts of the MENDO team, Rodney began to trust us, which paved the way for a transformative journey.
In just a few short months, Rodney achieved remarkable milestones. He underwent a life-changing aortic valve replacement surgery, successfully completed 12 weeks of hepatitis C treatment, and accessed essential healthcare services – including dental and optometry care and connection to a family doctor.
With MENDO’s ongoing support he was able to replace his identification, secure income support, and find stable housing. A critical aspect of Rodney’s journey was his receptivity to harm reduction education.
He made a significant change by switching from injecting methamphetamine to smoking, a decision that reflects his growing commitment to his well-being. As Rodney looks to the future, he is taking proactive steps towards further healing. He has demonstrated his dedication to recovery by spending 10 days in detox and was waitlisted for inpatient treatment when his story was written. His motivation is not just about personal growth; he is driven by a desire to set a positive example for his children.
Rodney’s transformation is a shining example of the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and growth. As he continues on his path towards healing, his story serves as a beacon of hope for others navigating similar challenges.
Kara at Sanctum 1.5
Kara, an HIV positive woman who was receiving methadone to manage her opiate addiction, was referred to Sanctum 1.5 by the Ministry of Social Services who became involved due to concerns regarding Kara’s capacity to parent.
The services offered at Sanctum 1.5 were required to avoid apprehension of her infant upon delivery. Kara grew up in foster care. She had one other child who resided in the care of her mother since birth.
Her psychiatrist stated that Kara lived with severe trauma and attachment disorder resulting from foster care. The trauma and attachment disorder were identified as a barrier to successful parenting.
Kara’s baby, Sara, was born on September 17 and was admitted to NICU shortly after birth for treatment of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Kara was admitted to Sanctum 1.5 on October 2 and Sara was admitted one week later, on October 9th. On discharge from NICU Sara arrived at Sanctum 1.5 on a very high dose of morphine and clonidine to manage opiate withdrawal. Prior to this, an infant receiving this high dose of morphine and clonidine would not have been discharged from NICU.
Given that Sara was coming to Sanctum 1.5 which offered 24/7 staffing and support for medication, an early discharge was accommodated. Guided by the rounding pediatrician at Sanctum 1.5, Sara was successfully weaned off morphine and clonidine. The supportive environment provided by Sanctum 1.5’s model of care facilitated successful bonding and attachment for Kara and Sara and allowed Kara to engage with support which allowed for healing and development of parenting skills.
The safe, supportive, and encouraging environment provided by Sanctum 1.5 was instrumental in Kara’s success and ability to parent. Since graduating from our program, Kara has gained custody of her other child and has successfully graduated from post secondary with a degree in marketing.
