The BeeHive – the next logical step in HIV Transitional Housing

beehive The BeeHive is an 11 suite apartment building allowing for the transition of residents from Sanctum into a supported living environment.  The Beehive allows for ongoing support and coordination of services needed to effectively transition residents into permanent and affordable housing. Holistic and transitional approach to care is needed to effectively manage the unique and challenging issues faced by those living with HIV in Saskatoon. This is achieved through a step-down approach to care. Clients transition from hospital (acute) to Sanctum (sub-acute) to a transitional apartment where they are no longer medically unstable but still require support to manage the psychosocial and practical aspects of living with HIV and homelessness.

The Hive gives residents the time needed after stabilizing at Sanctum to continue to gain life skills and support for effective transition into permanent and independent housing.  This is achieved through the provision of specialised supports that already exist in the community. The Beehive coordinates the provision of services from community supports such as Aids Saskatoon Outreach, HIV Case Management, Mental Health and Addictions outreach and nursing support, Westside Community Clinic and the continued support of Sanctum and its staff.  This approach not only benefits the client’s but utilizes existing supports and services more effectively and efficiently in one facility for improved service provision and support.
