Sanctum 1.5 is a non-profit organization that provides transition care & support. We serve pre/postnatal women living with or at high risk for HIV/AIDS who may also be affected by mental illness, addictions, poverty, and homelessness. 

The addictions counsellor will case manage with the Community Coordinator for the graduates of Sanctum 1.5 program. This team collaboration will work closely with other community partners to facilitate mental health, addictions, physical and other psychosocial care, and supports are provided. The Addictions counselor will work with clients on personal goals aimed at recovery and addiction management. Provide therapeutic counselling to clients who may present with multiple challenges affecting the success of parenting their child(ren). Provide support with life and parenting skills in a home and in community setting.  

Addictions Counselor Requirements & Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Diploma or certificate in Addiction or social work, human services related field, and or combination of education and work-related experience.
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Understanding challenges related to HIV harm reduction in family context, vertical transmission and care of infants born to HIV positive women.
  • Understanding of neonatal abstinence syndrome
  • Understanding of the challenges regarding child welfare involvement in vulnerable populations
  • Harm Reduction & Trauma and Violence Informed Care.  
  • Child Protection Act
  • Extensive knowledge on Community agencies and related support services
  • Clear communication skills, teamwork, and relationship building.
  • Ability to advocate, problem solve and work in a face pace environment.
  • Strong Decision-making in varying situations 
  • Ability to work field hours.
  • Vehicle & Drivers license are required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Charting & Documentation
  • one on one addiction counselling for clients
  • Provide weekly addictions programming for residents of Sanctum 1.5 and community clients.
  • Connect with community agencies and provide referrals as needed.
  • Actively engaging clients in the community
  • Provide individual support and facilitate case plan.
  • Ensuring safety of residents, contacting authorities if required.
  • Ensure outcomes are recorded measured and documented.
  • Assist clients in overcoming barriers related to successful parenting of infant and providing crisis intervention/prevention as required.
